April 2010;
Road projects should be decided by 10 May 2010
The Road Commission is recommending gravel on 2 miles of Cronk Rd between Cram and Kirby, and Hickory and Hintz. Those sections are very sandy. Caledonia Township would share the cost if it is done. Also recommended is seal coating of State Rd between Easton and Johnston, and Johnston Rd between State and M52. Saginaw county would share the cost of Johnstone Rd.
August 2009;
All 10 miles of graveling is done. I think the Road Commission did a pretty good job. Beware that the shoulders are very soft for now when saturated after a heavy rain!
The first application of dust control kept the dust down pretty well. We just had the 2nd application put down in the last couple weeks. I anticipate some of it will not be as effective as the first because of the heavy rains we recently received.
The paved stretch of Henderson Rd from M52 to Seymour, and Seymour Rd north to the 6 mile creek bridge were seal coated. I have had comments that rough patches are already appearing. Sadly, these roads were in such rough shape that only repaving at almost 7 times the cost of seal coating would make them nice and smooth again.
Seal coating is basically a band aid to try to seal up the cracks in the road and add a thin resurfacing. This helps prevent water from entering the cracks, freezing, and breaking the pavement up. We have pavement in even worse shape (parts of Geeck, Cronk, Riley for example) that I do not know yet how to finance without giving up almost all other road work for years. Almost all municipalities are faced with the same dilemma.
Easton Rd was seal coated between State and Seymour, which should help for several years.
